Millions of poorly patients will be able to walk into chemists and get instant tests to see if they need antibiotics, the head of the NHS is to announce. Simon Stevens said a national plan to spread “smart innovation” will ensure far quicker treatment for common ailments, and ease pressures on GPs, freeing up appointments for those who need them. Under the scheme, those suffering from sore throats will be able to visit their local pharmacy, to undergo tests to see if antibiotics would help them.
