Equal Treatment for Disabled Taxi Users

by | May 22, 2017 | Legal matters, News, Support

From April 6th 2017 it became illegal for taxi drivers to discriminate against wheelchair users. Taxi drivers face a fine of up to £1000 if they refuse to transport wheelchair users or attempt to charge extra. Taxi and private hire vehicles are now obliged by law to :
• Transport wheelchair users in their wheelchair
• Provide passengers with appropriate assistance
• Charge wheelchair users the same as non-wheelchair users
However, the new laws only apply in those areas where the local authority has drawn up a list of all the wheelchair-accessible taxis and private hire vehicles in their area.
